1936年，有两个男孩出生，熊本典道生在佐贺县鸟栖市出生，袴田岩生在静冈县浜名郡雄踏町。战后，典道通过了司法考试，成了静冈地方法院的审判员。而岩则辗转于职业拳坛，最终受挫无所作为，到静冈县清水市的一家味噌工厂当了工人。这两个人的人生原本不会有交集。　　1966年6月30日凌晨，清水市味噌工厂的专务桥口家遭人纵火，火扑灭后，人们发现了一家四口惨遭杀害的尸体。立松警官盯上了一个嫌疑人——曾经当过拳击手的工厂员工袴田岩。这家厂里的人基本都是桥口的亲戚朋友，只有他是毫无关系从外地来的；而且遇害的专务是柔道二段，犯人必须懂一定的格斗术才能将他杀死。岩被妻子抛弃了，还背着一身债，看起来相当可以。由于现场残留的证据很少，警方的侦查陷入了僵局。岩曾经一度被逮捕，却因为证据不足而被释放。不久后，警方再度逮捕了岩，岩起初一口咬定不是自己干的，却在被拘留三天后态度一百八十度大转弯，供认了自己的罪行。　　岩被起诉。负责审理此案的正是典道。在第一次公审中，岩全盘否认了自己供词。典道对警方的问讯产生了怀疑，开始调查供述词。他发现，起初岩坦白自己和桥口的妻发生过性关系，由此犯罪，后来他又供述由于自己要抚养年幼的孩子、照顾年迈的目前，为了钱才行凶。典道认为供词中的犯罪动机前后不一致，警方有逼供之嫌。他传唤立松警官等相关人员到庭，却没法找出真相，审理成了长时间的拉锯战.... 　　罪案发生一年后，9月13日，警方向法庭提供了新的证据——在工厂味噌翁里找到的带着血迹的衣服，衣服是岩的。岩是真凶么？还是警方捏造证据？　　局势开始对岩不利。典道反对判他有罪。但他是三个审判官中唯一持此观点的人，最终岩被判有罪。而作为主任审判官，典道不得不签署岩的死刑判决书。　　典道深受折磨，审理结束后，他辞职了，并持续对此案进行调查，还把调查的结果交给了辩方律师。　　1980年11月19，最高法院驳回了岩的上诉，12月12日，岩被判处死刑.....
